I spent the Winter Holidays in Rio de Janeiro with my sister, who lived there in the past, giving me almost a local’s insight to that city. Vaguely I knew that the goddess Yemaya was worshipped in Brazil but I had not made the connection to the New Year’s Eve celebration in which people all come to the beach at night, dressed in white and laden with white flowers. The white flowers are offered to Yemaya, known as Iemenjá in Brazil, at midnight by throwing them or sending them out on little boats into the sea.

Once I realized that not only was Yemaya an important deity to the practitioners of the Candomblé religion but was also alive to Christians and non-religious folks alike, I knew I had an opportunity to experience something special.

Yemayá came to Brazil, Cuba and Haiti with the Yoruba people of Nigeria in the 1600’s…

I recently did a woodcut selfie. I showed the print that I took a couple of days ago, and here now is the woodblock. I often like the blocks more than the prints, especially if they’re on a nice grained wood. I sometimes don’t want to ink up a woodblock because I think it would spoil the image.

I’ve been working on this nude for a while now, but I don’t really want to finish it and print it up because I really like the way it looks. Maybe I’ll finish cutting it and leave it unprinted, as a unique piece.

I missed June 11th. It’s going to happen. I am going to try not to worry about a couple of missed days here and there. It’s such a good challenge though to try and do one everyday. I can tell that I always feel just a little better when I do a drawing–even a simple one.

Chester is a funny little bird, I think he is a good character companion!

I’ve signed up for the #sketchbookskool Whimsical Klass and that starts June 18–really looking forward to that! I think that the klass will help me with character development and ideas. #sktchy is also proving to be a great inspiration resource.
