Opposed Concept and Process

Concept

I was first inspired by cold wind and how it can be both refreshing and also unwelcome. It’s also wildly unpredictable and can change directions in an instance. The emotion I wanted to portray was obvious discomfort, but in that discomfort, peace.

Process

I started out with a reference photo of an upturned head and created a sketch with a mechanical pencil. I prefer mechanical purely out of lazy motivation, I hate having to constantly sharpen drawing pencils. As for line weight, I use pen or paint later in the process. For her body, I tried to capture a relaxed position, returning to the theme of peace. Next, I rolled an eraser across the pencil lines to erase most of them but leave enough for me to see the basic outlines.
