It’s day 32/45 Covid-19 lockdown in Malaysia. I have been out twice this month, the old world outside is becoming a memory as I imagine tomorrow, looking forward to a new improved future forward.
This week’s pet portraits have been mentally challenging. I took on commission drawings of people’s most loved family members. Tackling the portraits was an opportunity for me to grow as a person and as an artist. A good friend said to me that this week has allowed me and my art to be less selfish. I think she is right.
Sketch of the day no 1342 in my moleskine sketchbook is in memory of Pepper the Golden Retriever. 🐶
Stay home, stay safe and thank you for the support and love ❤️

Chickens are a domestic subspecies of the red junglefowl (members of the pheasant family) that’s native to Asia.
I had wondered what that red thing is that’s on their heads so I looked it up. Turns out that red skin on top of a chicken or roosters head is called a comb. Roosters usually have larger combs than hens.
They can fly but because they are heavy they can only go about 60 meters that’s about 200 feet. So, they can fly just enough to make it over a fence.
Roosters perform a dance to impress the hens. This dance is called ‘tidbitting’ and roosters also do this dance to tell other chickens that they have found food.
I didn’t want to stick to the normal colors of these birds so I dress it up with lots of color in an abstract way. I used 10 different colors to make…
– Isso me deixa orgulhosa!
Today some intuitive mixed media painting but not following a class this time. I thought to see how I could integrate what I’ve been learning so far and create independently. Now it looks as if I’ve gained more confidence, getting more adventurous and taking more risks with experimenting. For one, my characters have started getting more elaborately dressed so colorfully. And today Little One is donned in a fancy head dress and a big robe!
I was in the mood to go for a huge A2 sized mixed media paper this time. The painting begins with a collage of Japanese language newspaper, tissues, paper napkins and even Christmas wrapping paper! Next I just piled on various swatches of colors and doodles using oil pastels, acrylic ink and paint and gouache till the paper was filled up so colorfully. So far so fun!
Lupita Winter Wonderland is a vision of connection between the landscape, tree, sky, and Lupita. She’s smiling! Lupita doesn’t smile that often, but she’s filled with joyful energy here. The tree sparkles with color that reflects in Lupita’s braided hair. Even though it’s snowing, Lupita isn’t cold. She feels completely at home in the snow.
“While her most recently completed artwork series,A Childhood in Nature, focused on her past, Emily Lupita’s current art project will tell the story of a vision for the future. Told from the perspective of her signature “Lupita” character, the series will focus on entities in the Iowa natural world who are beyond human, and the way humans interact – or could interact – with these entities. The paintings…
I am. I’m in Northern Va and it’s still deadly out there! However, I am taking this time to become addicted to wine and making cards. Please buy cards to mail to your loved ones and SAVE THE USPS! go to: https://penzart.square.site/
I’m also selling painted grow bags for your balcony container garden 🙂
By the way, is anyone else feeling deadly afraid at the least little cough? I’ve had the worst ever allergies, unlike ever before, and they come with a sore throat and upper respiratory congestion. I don’t want to “open up,” and go out, I want to isolate further until there is a fix, and yet I want to connect, go shopping and see my kids, friends and 98 year old mother! Tough emotions, tough times.
