For the 5th of December the poem I have chosen inmy Advent Anthology fromCanterbury PressWaiting on the Word, is Those Winter Sundays by Robert Hayden. You can hear me read this poem by clicking on the title or the play button. The image above, bodying forth so much of the poem, was created by Linda Richardson, who writes:

Sometimes a piece of art comes into your mind already complete. So it was with this work. I used the homely linen fabric as the base, and in the middle of the work there is a rip, a rift, burnt round the edges. Beneath that, orange paper glows at the centre. The fabric is stained and frayed and there are pine needles stitched into the work because they make excellent fire lighters. The text is taken from Bible pages, ‘Come unto me, all ye…

Making a Mark

🧵🧷🎨 WELL LOVELIES, SOMETIMES SKETCHING AND FASHION FIND A BRIDGE. AS TEXTILE ART COULD MEET PAINTING.

thecraftycreek

Painting is not my forte, my mum was a brilliant artist which is not always a help! I’ve got two textile workshops on the go at the moment, both of which required paint! This was my cutting out table earlier today!

This week on TextileArtist.org there’s a free week long workshop with Gwen Hadley, I really enjoyed the mini free workshops they held last year so I decided to have a go. They have all sorts of different textile artists doing workshops in their stitch club, I’d love to be in Stitch Club but I know at the moment I haven’t the time to commit to the stitching, maybe one day…in the meantime I’m enjoying their occasional freebie.

The first video was released yesterday, it’s all about making a mark, we had to choose three colours and collect various fabrics and mark making tools beforehand. I chose denim blue, gold…

Who was Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun? — Women’n Art (Share)

♀️👒 🎨 SO TRUE, SISTERS. SOME WOMEN ARTISTS, WERE ALMOST HEROINES CROSSING PAINTING HISTORY.

Silicon Valley Types

Louise-Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun was a French portraitist of 18th century born in Paris. She is famous for being the portraitist of Marie Antoinette, the last Queen of France. Her personal style is considered as a mix, because her subject and colour palette can be considered similar to late Rococo while other elements are aligned […]

A coatigan to remind me of my grandma’s carpet: Burda 12/2011 #114

⚛️ HI SISTERS, SOMETIMES WHEN ART IS ON GARMENTS, A MASTERPIECE CAN BE MOVING.

He Cooks... She Sews!

I was lucky enough to get 2 yards of this totally glorious fabric from emmaonesock last year. It looks like a fabulous vintage carpet.

It’s a wool fleece with raised areas, a brushed texture, and decorative selvedges. The design seems to be knitted in as you can see below on the reverse.

The fabric arrived and I petted it. A lot. And then it sat in my stash. You know. That too precious to cut into fabric. I had a Pinterest board dedicated to it. Searching for the perfect pattern. Surely what I did with something similar to this fabric several years ago was too simple and wouldn’t be good enough?

Winter passed, before I was smart enough to realise that it was more than good enough. I still wear the coatigan I made in 2013 a lot. It’s the ideal pattern for this fabric.

So I bit the bullet…

A Sewing Nook

🧷🧵HI BEAUTIES, WHO DOES NOT REMEMBER THE FIRST GRANDMOTHER’S SEWING MACHINE?

Deliberate Sketching

A few weeks ago, one of the Tuesday night painters set up a still life with an old sewing machine, a skirt hanging in the window, and other sewing items. I liked how the scene evoked memories of sewing rooms from my youth. Without planning, I began to paint rapidly, expecting to capture the nostalgia I felt.

Two hours later, when it was time to quit, I was dissatisfied with the sketch. The composition was awkward. The blind was only on the right side, leaving a large blank space. The skirt extended below the base of the sewing machine and seemed as though it might be a curtain.

I kept fiddling with the painting over the next two weeks. I shortened the skirt, extended the blinds, and added small details. Unfortunately, the color below the skirt is now overworked, but even so, I like it better.

Crazy Patchwork

🧵🔍 HI HONEYS, HERE SOME DETAILS I DIDN’T REALIZE YESTERDAY, WHILE WE WERE DANCING.

thecraftycreek

I’ve been trying to finish a few projects this week, tidying up loose ends before I start my next big project. Last Monday at my Skipton Stitchers meeting we had a workshop on Crazy Patchwork, we had to prepare a square before hand using a pattern provided…

We then took a selection of trims and threads to the meeting to start embellishing the square, this was my selection, as you can see I went with a bee theme and a range of buttons, beads, trims and threads in blue and gold mainly.

Our first task was to embroider and trim the seams. I really enjoyed this, picking out the detail in the trim to guide my embroidery. Having stitched all day, I then carried on at home and by the end of Monday evening I’d finished the seams…

Next to stitch was the shapes themselves, I found this more difficult…
