Honore Sharrer

👁️ 👁️ WELL DEARS, SURREALIST ART NO NEEDS ANY EXPLANATION. ENJOY WITH YOUR OWN GAZING.

The Women's Studio

1920-2009

Honore Sharrer was an artist who made paintings, lithographs, aquatints, photographs, and drawings. Her colorful paintings, with their blending of Social Realism and Surrealism, showed the experiences of everyday people but with a slight air of unreality. Her early paintings depicted American working people in a Social Realist style. Her work then transitioned into Surrealism, often with humor and political overtones.  Later she would explore the imagery of myth and fairy tales to free herself from “the punishment of ‘realism’.”

Sharrer studied at the California School of Fine Art and at Yale University.  During World War II she worked as a welder in a shipyard in San Francisco.  She created storyboards for the movie industry.  She moved to New York and worked in a shipyard in New Jersey.

Her adherence to representational and figural art in the 1950s and 1960s came up against the…

Goulash Coming Soon

🥣🍲🍛 HI DEARS ! IN MY OPINION, KITCHEN CAN BE ANOTHER KIND OF ATELIER TO CREATE WITH FOOD. THIS SISTER MADE A WONDERFUL ARTWORK OF THIS COZY CORNER. CONGRATS SARAH !

Deliberate Sketching

I was sketching different views of our kitchen, trying out various views for my series portraying the rooms in our home. Did I want one with the view looking out on the patio? Or maybe one focusing on the odds and ends on our kitchen table? The fruit on the counter? Nothing was really clicking with my imagination.

It was getting late and my husband was making goulash on the other side of the kitchen. And it came to me, that the view I like best is the one with him cooking.

East-West Shrimp Salad

🦐❤️🦐❤️🦐 HI DEAR ARTISTS! FOR MY TASTE, SHRIMP IS A REAL DELIGHT. A TRUE ‘DELICATESSEN’.

snapshotsincursive

What’s Cooking in Gail’s Kitchen? Elevated Edibles: East-West Shrimp Salad! Shrimp, on its own, is a star attraction for a special meal. That pretty much goes without saying. I like the idea that shrimp makes a main course look complex, or restaurant-worthy. By adding steamed mukimame, mandarin oranges, sesame seeds, and soy sauce, suddenly an everyday garden salad sings a different tune. The fusion of flavors becomes enlightening, like the eternal knowledge of an Eastern sunrise. Is it any wonder I heart shrimp?

EAST-WEST SHRIMP SALAD

Ingredients:

1 pound shrimp, shelled, deveined, and cooked

1/2 cup mukimame, steamed

1/2 cup mandarin orange segments

1/2 cup baby cucumber, skin on and sliced

1/4 red pepper, cut into strips

Lettuce greens

Ingredients for Dressing:

2 tablespoons olive oil

2 tablespoons garlic wine vinegar

2 tablespoons agave nectar

1 tablespoon mayonnaise

1/2 teaspoon Italian seasoning mix

2 teaspoons soy sauce

1/2 teaspoon ground…

Space and Substance

🐪 🕰️ 🪑 OH SISTERS, SIT DOWN PLEASE. THE TABLE IS READY AND YOU ARE INVITED.

How to Write About Art

John Minton’s illustrations are very striking! I wanted to see more of them, so I bought Elizabeth David’s book Mediterranean Food published in 1950, in which we find Minton’s illustrations that accompany the recipes. Then I decided to draw one of his illustrations – the frontispiece for the chapter on “Substantial Dishes”.

Minton confines himself to the element of line to create a complete scenario: horizontal lines – for the horizon and broken horizontal lines for the sea; curved lines for the curtains; block lines for the chequered floor; diagonal lines for the shadows; cross-hatching lines to convey more shadows. As the viewer looks at the picture, one feels that the light is coming from over our left shoulder, causing the objects on the table to cast shadows.

What really intrigues me, however, is the way Minton has created space. He has done this in different ways. The tent, building…

Chickpea Salad

🍽️ 🍋💚💛 HI LOVELIES, A SALAD ALWAYS CAN BE VERY WELCOME AND HERE LOOKS SO TASTY AND COLORFUL.

Honey Lemon Chai

This chickpea salad is simply a must. It not only takes just under 10 minutes to make but also will keep you satisfied for hours. This salad very quickly become my favourite lunch option during the times when I was on my journey of losing weight, as chickpeas are loaded with fibre, which keeps us feeling fuller for a long period of time. But that’s not all the benefits this salad has. Chickpeas are high in vitamins and minerals, that help with reducing blood pressure, cholesterol, and also are boosting our immune system.

This easy 2-step salad can be simply enjoyed on its own or as a side dish for slow-cooked Greek lamb or burgers.
