Arts of May

As I’ve been organizing my prints, I came upon several small linocuts (2 1/4″ x 3″) that I made sometime before 1993. I know they’re from before that year because I changed my name in 1993 (see About) and the initials would have changed from “SB” to “LSM”.

These are lighthearted images. All are of girls (I see them as somewhere between 10 and 13 years old) wearing hats plus one girl with a whale on her head. How the theme came to me, I don’t recall. Perhaps I was trying to keep a lid on my emotions. Also, the girls seem to be merging with aspects of nature–plants or a whale–which has been a theme in my work.
