Hi folks!
During the period of the Rococo style, in France called ‘Galante’, the sanguine pencil was ideal for drawing without the pronounced contrasts provided by the color black. The models’ hair was treated very delicately, but there was a special interest in representing the small folds of their shiny dresses.

The sanguine pencil is lovely to use. Watteau must have inspired many artists with his sensitive use of the medium. The portrait is charming.
